When first learning an instrument, it is important to establish proper habits in tone production, posture and hand position. In the beginning, we focus on using the correct embouchure to produce a sound on the mouthpiece (with reed and ligature attached) and neck. Once a proper tone is established, all five pieces come together and your fingers are properly placed on the keys; your left hand on sits on the upper half and your right hand on the lower half. Please be patient and use caution; never grab hold of the keys! Watch these videos for assistance and have fun! Don't forget to use your swab when you are done.
FYI: Mr. Harwood is demonstrating on a tenor saxophone. Your alto will produce a higher sound. He also has an awesome accent. :-)
